How much NEET score is required for MBBS in Karnataka?

In 2026, a government MBBS seat in Karnataka on general merit needed an All India Rank of roughly 55,000 or better in KEA Round 1, which corresponded to a score in the high 500s. Top government colleges closed near AIR 2,000. Ranks, not marks, decide seats.

"How many marks do I need for MBBS in Karnataka?" is one of the most searched NEET questions in the state. The honest answer has three parts: it depends on the type of seat, it depends on your category, and it is decided by rank, not by marks. Here is what the 2026 data shows.

All figures below are as of 2026, from NTA's NEET UG 2026 result and Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) allotment data as reported during the 2026 counselling. Check KEA's official notices for the current year before relying on them.

Why ranks matter more than marks

NEET papers differ in difficulty from year to year. In 2025, the topper scored 686 out of 720. In 2026, after the re-exam, two candidates scored 715. A score of 600 meant something different in each year. Your All India Rank (AIR) is what counselling uses, because it compares you with everyone who wrote the same paper.

How 2026 scores mapped to ranks

NTA's official 2026 score distribution:

Score (out of 720)Candidates at or above itApproximate rank ceiling
70019AIR 19
6501,492AIR 1,500
60010,160AIR 10,200
50090,780AIR 90,800

So in 2026, 600 marks placed a candidate roughly within the top 10,000 in India, and 500 within the top 91,000.

Government MBBS seats in Karnataka, general merit

KEA counsels the state quota (85%) of government college seats, plus government-quota seats in private colleges. Reported 2026 Round 1 closing ranks for general merit (GM) included:

College or seat2026 Round 1 closing AIR2025
Bangalore Medical College and Research Instituteabout 1,779about 2,154
Mysore Medical College and Research Instituteabout 5,692about 7,069
Last government college in Round 1about 55,102about 42,889

Across the full 2025 season, after all rounds, the last government general-merit seat went at about AIR 79,056. Later rounds usually go deeper than Round 1 as students upgrade or leave seats.

What this means in marks: in 2026, a rank of about 55,000 sat somewhere between 500 and 600 marks, most likely in the mid to high 500s. For a top government college like BMCRI, students needed well over 650.

Categories change the picture

Karnataka's state quota has category and horizontal reservations, including SC, ST, Category 1, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B, EWS, rural, Kannada-medium, and Hyderabad-Karnataka (Article 371J) for colleges in that region. Closing ranks for reserved categories are often much deeper. For example, reported 2026 Round 2 closing ranks at BMCRI ranged from about 3,480 for general merit to about 49,987 for SC general. Check your exact category in the KEA brochure.

Private college seats

In Karnataka's private (non-minority) medical colleges, about 40% of seats are government quota (G), filled through KEA at a regulated fee, and about 40% are private quota (P), plus NRI and other seats. Private-quota and NRI seats close at much deeper ranks, because fees are far higher. Any candidate who qualifies NEET (50th percentile for general, 213 marks in 2026) is eligible for these seats if they can pay. See MBBS fees in Karnataka.

All India Quota

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) fills 15% of government seats across India through the All India Quota, plus deemed universities and central institutions. In 2026, MCC Round 1 for MBBS closed at about AIR 22,342 for the unreserved category. Karnataka students can apply in both MCC and KEA counselling.

A realistic target

If your goal is a government MBBS seat in Karnataka on general merit, plan for a rank comfortably inside the top 50,000, which in a year like 2026 meant a score in the high 500s or more. For a top Bengaluru government college, plan for the top few thousand.

Targets like these are useful for planning, not for fear. A student aiming at 600 builds the habits that also secure BDS, AYUSH and other seats if the day goes differently.

Beyond MBBS

The same NEET rank opens BDS, BAMS, BHMS and other courses, often at much deeper ranks. Read how to become a doctor after 10th in Karnataka for the full map, and KEA NEET counselling, step by step to understand how seats are actually allotted.

A note on these numbers

Closing ranks move every year with the paper, the number of seats and student choices. Use them as a guide, and update them with KEA's figures each counselling season.
